FYI from Pastor Jose Cortes Jr.
Director
March 5, 2010
Dear Jose,

It's been an interesting and beautiful week.  I just participated in a meeting that lasted a few days in Chicago, Illinois.  This meeting was put together by the Center for Youth Evangelism of Andrews University; the objective was to talk about an initiative called Church of Refuge (COR) http://www.adventistyouth.org/cor/. It was significant to spend a few days together with several colleagues, pastors, youth direCORctors from several World Divisions, and church leaders talking about how our church can become a place of refuge where young adults can find an atmosphere for worship, discipleship, service, and leadership among others.  As this concept develops I will keep you up to date.

Prior to that on Sabbath, I was able to preach and spend some time at the French Salem Church in Long Island. The youth and young adults of the Church, under the leadership of Ella Laguerre did an awesome job planning & executing the Black History Day Youth Sabbath. From Sabbath School to Lunch and afternoon activities, the day was a blessing. My family & I were blessed.

After church I was able to visit Carlos Mieses, who is now at Mount Sinai Hospital in NYC.  I was blessed to see Carlos, who is doing much better.  I was also happy to see his parents and several close friends smile.  As we had a mini-vespers together I was glad to hold Carlos' hand and thank God for the miracle He has done in Carlos' life.  I would like to request that you pray for total healing of his left leg.  I assured Carlos that with God's power he will walk, run, and swim again.  Let's continue to pray for him.

On Sunday, I was able to pass by JFK Airport to see Team #4 on the way to Haiti.  Team #4 is formed by Emma Franck (AYES Corps) and Sara Abduljalil (AY Leader @ Jackson Heights). A few moments after they left we welcomed back Team #3 formed by Teddy Williamson, Angel Reyes, & Mel Francis.  They were excited about the work they did, happy to be back on American soil, yet missing the new friends they made in Haiti.  They could not stop talking.  Let's pray for our team in Haiti now.  Let's also remember Pastor Ruben Merino, who is leading the GNYC Relief Effort there, Iris Szoboszlai (GNYC ACS), and Samuel Maxine (French Gethsemane Elder) who has been there for over a month and now leads the UN/ADRA Food Distribution in Port-Au-Prince.

On Sunday, Dr. Herbert Goulding (GNYC Associate Health Ministries Director) and Dr. Robert Ortiz (Wingdale Adventist Church) are heading to Haiti with a team formed by 5 medical professionals.

To follow the work that our young adults have been doing in Haiti, please check the Updates on the GNYCYOUTH NEWS Section on our website: www.gnycyouth.com

Lots of Love & Blessings!!!

INFO ON CHILE'S EARTHQUAKE
Chile flagInfo on Chile's Earthquake: Just received a note from Pastor Ruben Merino (GNYC ACS Director) stating that 1 Adventist died as the result of the earthquake, another 3 died as a result of the tsunami which hit the Coastal areas of Chile. A total of 19 churches were destroyed and another 30 were damaged. Over 302 Adventist families totally lost their houses and over 700 houses of Adventist families were badly damaged.  For more info on the earthquake in Chile and our response to it, please check the following link:  http://gnycyouth.com/article/articleview/973/1/87.
GIVE ONE HOUSE TO ONE FAMILY IN HAITI
HomesHaiti Give ONE HOUSE to ONE FAMILY in HAITI (Donate 1 TENT to a Family in Haiti): This initiative is not only for the Adventurer and Pathfinder Clubs; it is also for Teens, Young Adults, and for each Church Member in our Conference.
Our people in Haiti need a place to live, a Shelter, they NEED TENTS.  Over 5,000 Adventist Families, a total of over 20,000 Adventist Members are homeless in Port-Au-Prince right now.

Please, make a special plea in your church for the next few days and ask each member and family, who is able to donate a tent to do so (preferably a 6-10 person tent in good shape and complete with all its stakes & parts).  Each tent donated will be shipped to Haiti and it will become the HOUSE of a FAMILY in Port-Au-Prince and its surroundings.  ONE TENT equals a HOUSE for a FAMILY in HAITI.

You can take the TENTS to the following locations by March 14 or before, please make arrangement before drop-off:

Grand Concourse Adventist Church (Bronx) @ 1275 Grand Concourse Bronx NY   10452-7805
Adventist Community Service Headquarters (Queens) @ 41-26 58th Street Woodside, NY  11377
Greater New York Conference Office (Long Island) @ 7 Shelter Rock Rd., Manhasset, NY 11030
French Gethsemane Adventist Church (Brooklyn) @ 357 Empire Blvd. Brooklyn NY   11225-3203
Camp Berkshire (Upstate New York) @ 680 Berkshire Road. Wingdale, NY 12594

HaitipeopleCHILDREN'S CLOTHING
Our Team in Haiti has urgently requested Children's Clothing (Sizes 0-10 yrs old), as we try to help a group of orphans at the different Adventists Shelters in Port-Au-Prince.  The clothes must be new or in a very good condition (summer clothing, no winter clothing please).  You can drop off the Children's Clothing together with the tents.

The Prospect Spanish and Broadway Spanish Adventist Churches have already committed to donating 100 tents to this effort.  Special thanks to Pastors Camilo de Leon and Camilo Carvajal for their leadership on this project.
ADVENTURERS, PATHFINDERS, & MASTER GUIDES FOR HAITI
Recognition HaitiAdventurers, Pathfinders, & Master Guides for Haiti (Fundraising Continues till March 13): During our Recognition Day, it was mentioned that we would continue the Adventurer, Pathfinder, & Master Guide Fundraising for Haiti for a few more weeks.  We have shipped more Fundraising Cards to each church or sent them with your Coordinator or Pastor.

Remember, the purpose of this effort is not to collect money within the church, our chRecognition Haiti2urch members have done a lot and we are grateful for their generosity. This Fundraising is mean to be carried out by Adventurers, Pathfinders, and Master Guides outside the Church. Clubs which have not submitted their fundraising, still have time to do it.  Other clubs which have already submitted their fundraising and would like to do more can still do so.  Our deadline for the funds is March 14.

Please, send or bring the checks to the Office of the Adventist Youth Ministries Department. 100% of the funds collected are going to Haiti together with the rest of the funds collected by the Greater New York Churches.

DAY OF PRAYER & FASTING FOR GNYC YOUTH & YOUNG ADULTS (March 19 @ each local Church)
prayerDay of Prayer & Fasting for GNYC Youth & Young Adults (March 19 @ each local church): We, the youth & young adults of Greater New York have planned and organized these Days of Fasting & Prayer for several years and have seen great results and wonderful things happened. We don't these days because of some type of tradition, this is totally Biblical.  We pray and we fast because we know the tremendous power of God, which is accessible to us through prayer (Mark 9:29). For some resources on "What to do on a Day of Fasting & Prayer" please click on the following link: http://gnycyouth.com/article/articleview/886/1/61/24/61/.

Also keep the implementation of our Theme FACE2FACE with Jesus and our Initiatives for 2010 in your prayers during this day.  For more info on the Theme and the Initiatives for 2010 go to the Homepage of our website: www.gnycyouth.com.

Let's not keep this to ourselves, invite others to join us on this very special day.
