Home at Universite Adventiste D’ Haiti

Jean Josue PIERRE, Teddy Williamson
Tonight we drove up to the gate of Universite Adventiste D’ Haiti; the gate was closed so we had to wait for someone to open it. Within minutes two heavily armed security guards swung the gate opened so we could enter. Nothing is wrong with this picture, as it is not uncommon to see security protecting places of interest in Haiti. What is ironic however, as was remarked by a member in our delegation, is that the gate is being protected but the surrounding walls have completely collapsed.

The solid truth is the University compound has absolutely no protection; the surrounding walls have been flattened and approximately 15,000 people call it home. Exit and re-entry is an open thoroughfare, people sleep just about anywhere they can find a spot and anything they can use for a bed. The small stream that runs through the ground is the main and perhaps the only laundry mat as well as the open bathroom.
University wall completely destroyed

This is undoubtedly a serious challenge for the University as acknowledged by its president Jean Josue PIERRE. He said getting the people off the property will no easy task and while the earthquake has done some structural damage, the destruction cause by humans, such as the cutting down of the trees, will have a devastating effect.
